Nobody traps you with a house. A house just sits there. You can sell a house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What traps you is the calendar \u2014 every square already spoken for, every week assigned before it arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Verbier in February. The other place in July. The wedding you’re expected at in September. The anniversary trip locked into the same week for eleven years. The birthday dinner at the one restaurant you have to book in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

None of it is a single decision. Each one, alone, is reasonable. Even generous. It’s only when you look at the whole year at once that you notice there isn’t a single open week \u2014 and there hasn’t been for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the part nobody warns you about. They tell you about the house, the membership, the wardrobe. Nobody mentions that the real cost isn’t paid once. It’s paid every year, in advance, in the form of a calendar you agreed to a decade ago and can no longer remember agreeing to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freedom was never going to look like more rooms. More rooms is just more calendar. Freedom looks like a Tuesday in March with nothing written on it \u2014 and the genuinely unsettling discovery, for most people who arrive here, is how long it’s been since they’ve seen one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was never about access to more places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
